Quiet Trouble

Mornings are always a hectic time of day, from making lunches to making sure everyone is clothed, diapered and fed. I always seem to think I can fit more into my mornings than is really possible. If it were my choice, I would always leave the house spick and span. But spick and span have no meaning at this hour.

Today was a usual morning (besides the fact that Connor is out of town and I was up for in time for Seminary because the substitute was late.) Often Corbin and Ashlyn wander off and do their imaginary play thing, which is great! I noticed it was awfully quiet. Something that is so unusual that it strikes an uncomfortable cord deep inside (all you busy mothers know what I am talking about.) I, of course, decided to enjoy it for a minute longer as I finished spoon feeding Kamryn. Ashlyn came trotting down the stairs just moments later. I instinctively asked her if Corbin was with her. He wasn't.

That was the moment that struck fear into my heart. Corbin is my lovey, dovey child, but he is also my child that does "those things." You know, "those things" that engrave memories for story telling. The stories you tell when you sit with other couples playing the "who can top that story" game.

I ran upstairs to find him, trying not to show my anxiety. I found him in my bathroom quietly, and of course happily, playing in my nail polish. I screamed (a thing I completely regret, and something I shouldn't do before evaluation the scene.) I think I scared him more than anything.
As I was quickly cleaning up his left leg (remember it is pre-school time) I realized I might need to take a picture so that I could laugh about this later. So this picture excludes the addition of an entirely pink left leg. It took longer than I had imagined to clean it all up. Luckily, he got only the tile and not a single dot of nail polish on my bathroom rugs! At least he is a neat-messy maker!
He also found my little paint brush I use when painting french manicures. That was of course part of the mess. But can I blame him? He just wanted his nails painted. Is that too much to ask? Maybe it is when you still don't talk very well, you found the nail polish and you learned how to open the bottle yourself!!!!!

To be honest my older two have not gotten into much and I have not been a hard core baby proofer. I am learning my lesson this time around! This boy is hard to be mad at, he is truly my most gentle and kindhearted child!

Here are Corbin's other reckless moments:
  • pen deeply engraved on the wall just prior to moving
  • Vaseline slathered all over his arms and legs (again luckily he did not get it on any furniture)
  • marker (let me clarify, this is a dry erase marker) on the couch, rug and plush rocking horse
  • opening candy at the store without permission (this really drives me crazy since I am very occupied at the register, I mean whoever thought of putting every kind of candy known to man at check out did not have children of their own!!!!)
  • running away from me in the stores and playing hide and seek in the clothes racks
  • sticking plastic lizard tails in light sockets
Tag, your it, tell me your worst stories!!!

Hey, at least the lizard tails are plastic! But really, it is fun to laugh about adventures of other people's kids (especially your sister's), or to laugh about your own kids' adventures well after the fact. Thanks for the stories!

I never would have taken the picture, I would have cleaned it up and probably screamed once more! Go you! You're such an awesome mom, and one I inspire to be more like!

Love it! I mean at the time it's TERRIBLE!!! But they really do make good stories later on. I'm still trying to get over the whole Vaseline thing.... but if you REALLY want to know one of my stories, I think the best one so far is when Skyler was about 2 weeks old (Lily was 13 months) and we had all just woken up and I noticed that Lily was having a hard time chewing something that I hadn't given her. So I pop it out of her mouth and, of course, it was Skyler's umbilical cord that had just fallen off. It was just disgusting but now I can still crack up about it. :)

Oh, that was a good laugh before bedtime!! But my loudest laugh that Steve could hear in the other room was Heather's story of the umbilical cord!

That looks like a good paint job! I did have a friend tell me she found her silverware drawer filled with catchup.
I dont know if I can top off that story but a few days ago Corilynn took my makeup and painted the front of my 4 drawer (white) dresser with mascara before taking my expensive liquid-to-powder eye shadow and smearing it all over herself, the carpet (wich didnt come out until some serious shampooing with a fancy pants shampooer) and all the little bobbles of things in my closet where I keep my makeup.

Ok i just read the umbilical cord one and that is - wow, there are no words. ha ha

Canon (my second) stole so many candy bars. I'd pay for my groceries, then see that he'd eaten half of one already, and have to pay again.

And DI is the worst for that hide-and-seek thing, I've found. My kids scare the heck out of me there, thinking they're lost.

Oh kids. kids kids kids.

Thanks Michal... I love being able to see and hear what is going on and laugh too... specially since we are so far away. This makes me feel closer. :)

Isn't it sad when kids are extrememly quiet things like this are the result?

We'll be sure to let you know next time we visit Oklahoma together. I forgot about your ties to B.ville.

You have to watch out for those quiet ones!

The worst two times that stick out in my mind that Ethan has done was when we had our backs turned while moving a heavy upholstered chair up the stairs to make room for the Christmas tree, and Ethan got a bottle of baby wash from the bathroom and poured the whole bottle on our hallway carpet. Cringe!

Another time, Ethan got into a large tub of Aquaphor and spread it all over himself head to toe, spread it all over my bathroom tile, ran across the carpet, wiped it on the walls in two rooms, climbed all over my bedspread and got into my bed, and then went down the hall and got himself in the bathtub, which is where I found him after I'd finished nursing the twins. After repainting two rooms, new bedding, and bathing him in Dawn dishsoap, the only evidence is three footprints from my bathroom to my bed. I keep my Aquaphor out of reach now.

Oh my gosh that had to be the worst clean up job ever. When kids are the quietest that is when they are in the most trouble.

Oh no. i hate cleaning up nail polish. a few weeks ago the boys opened every color they could and painted the wall in the guest bedroom. (For once it was Kimball who found them, not me and I heard him yelling.) and last week was the paint on the walls and carpet and couch, we've had permanent marker on the walls, honey, grape juice on the carpet....it's something new every day. and i wonder why i'm losing my mind! Good luck to you with your wild child and new calling. holy smokes!
